Renowned Drug and Alcohol Recovery Programs Hosts First-Ever ‘Recovery Weekend’
Events Promise a Mix of Social Events and Serious Discussions About Recovery in Philadelphia
April 25th, 2011 - Philadelphia, PA – One Day At A Time (ODAAT) fortifies its commitment to progression and solutions for the epidemic of drug and alcohol addiction in Philadelphia by hosting its inaugural Recovery Weekend, May 5-7, 2011. The schedule is as follows:
What: 1st Annual Spring Fundraiser
When: Thursday, May 5, 2011, 7pm – 11pm
Where: Benny the Bums Restaurant and Bar, 9991 Bustleton Avenue
Details: ODAAT supporters and stakeholders gather for a night of food and fun for a good cause. The organization will host a raffle for a chance to win Southwest Airline tickets, a 42” flat screen TV, a Fresh Grocer gift card, a Sunoco gas card, and other in-demand items. As a charitable partner, Benny the Bums will donate 20% of the restaurant’s proceeds from the evening to ODAAT recovery programs.
What: Community Basketball Game
When: Friday, May 6, 2011, 6pm – 8pm
Where: Martin Luther King Recreation Center, 2101 Cecil B. Moore Street
Details: The ODAAT “Overcomers” and the District Attorney’s “Avengers” go head-to-head in a community basketball game. Light refreshments will be served, door prizes will be given and DJ Thomas Love will be providing musical entertainment for the evening.
What: 1st Annual Recovery Forum: “The State of Recovery: Where We’ve Been, Where We Are, Where We’re Going”
When: May 7, 2011, 10am – 3pm
Where: AFCOM Center, 2432 West Lehigh Avenue
Details: The ODAAT Recovery Forum will raise awareness to drug and alcohol recovery ‘as they see it’ from the ground level and identify innovative strategies for effective recovery. The day-long event will bring together local, city and state government officials, advocates, crisis workers, ODAAT clients and other key stakeholders. Confirmed panelists include Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell, District Attorney Seth Williams, State Senator Shirley Kitchen, Representative Jewell Williams and Ms. Sade Ali, Deputy Commissioner of the Philadelphia Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual DisAbility Services. Special invited guests include Mayor Michael Nutter, Governor Tom Corbett, and State Senator Vincent Hughes.
ODAAT provides services to low-income and homeless men and women suffering from addiction and HIV/AIDS in Philadelphia. ODAAT was founded in 1983 by Reverend Henry T. Wells when he opened his home to a group of recovering addicts, laying the groundwork for a peer-based/community-based recovery program. Since then, ODAAT has increased its scope and impact to include transitional housing facilities, comprehensive medical case management services, and services to address the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the addicted community. ODAAT is a program of Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition.

HIV Fact:
In 2010 the rate of new HIV infections among non-Hispanic blacks was 7 times the rate among whites. Hispanics saw a rate 3 times that of the white population. Whites accounted for 35% of estimated new HIV infections. Asians/Pacific Islanders accounted for roughly 2% and American Indians/Alaska Natives accounted for roughly 1%.
HIV Fact:
Every 9 1/2 minutes another person becomes infected with the HIV virus in the United States.
HIV Facts:
The CDC recommends that everyone in the US aged 13-64, regardless of perceived risk, get tested for HIV to help stop the spread of the disease.
It also recommends that sexually active gay and bisexual men be tested for HIV at LEAST once a year.
HIV Facts:
One in every two people living with HIV in the United States is Black. Philadelphia reports 67%of new infections are African Americans.
2010 CDC data indicates about half of the just over 1 million Americans living with HIVS or AIDS are black.
HIV Fact:
In the United States, men account for 73% of new infections. Philadelphia reports African American women are the fastest growing population.
The CDC estimates that one-quarter of HIV-infected people are unaware of their HIV infection and that these cases account for 54-70% of all new infections.
HIV Facts:
The CDC estimates that African Americans are more severely and disproportionately affected by HIV than any other racial/ethnic group in the United States.
More infections occur among young people under 30 than any other age group. Persons 30-39 have the second highest infection rate.
