One Day At A Time Hosts AmeriCorps Rally Projects
PHILADELPHIA, May 11, 2009 - One Day At A Time (ODAAT), in partnership with Hope Worldwide PA, will mobilize over 100 volunteers for a neighborhood clean-up and improvement day in North Philadelphia on Thursday, May 14, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
The clean up efforts will include an six-block area from Broad Street west to 17th Street and from York Street south to Susquehanna Avenue. Volunteers will also build a playground, plant a community garden, and paint a mural at the Winchester Recreation Center, located at 15th and York Streets. This area of North Philadelphia is particularly hard hit by poverty, substance abuse, homelessness, HIV/AIDS, and crime. The event is part of national AmeriCorps Rally week.
The event will begin with a rally at the Winchester Recreation Center from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m.. Hope Worldwide will present an award to Mel Wells for his work in the community with drug and alcohol addiction and HIV/AIDS. Following the rally, volunteers will hit the streets for lot and block cleanups and improvements at the Winchester Recreation Area. Volunteers will also be on hand with face painting and children's activities for children from M. Hall Stanton Elementary School and the Tanner Duckrey School. Children's activities will take place at the AFCOM Center at 2432 W. Lehigh Avenue.
One Day At A Time and Hope Worldwide anticipate that the event will bring forty AmeriCorps volunteers, seventy One Day At A Time current and former clients, and twenty community volunteers. Mel Wells, president of One Day At A Time, says, "The beauty of this event is not just the work that gets done, but in seeing Americorps members, clients, Hope Worldwide volunteers, and community members work together to improve our community."
ODAAT provides services to low-income and homeless men and women suffering from addiction and HIV/AIDS in Philadelphia. ODAAT was founded in 1983 by Reverend Henry T. Wells when he opened his home to a group of recovering addicts, laying the groundwork for a peer-based/community-based recovery program. Since then, ODAAT has increased its scope and impact to include transitional housing facilities, comprehensive case management services, and services to address the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the addicted community. ODAAT is a program of Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition.
