One Day At A Time Hosts North Philly Clean Up
November 2, 2009 - PHILADELPHIA, November 2, 2009 - One Day At A Time (ODAAT), in partnership with NET and Everything Must Change, will mobilize over 150 individuals for a neighborhood clean-up day in North Philadelphia on Friday, November 6, at 10:00 a.m. Participants will gather at the Winchester Recreation Center, located at 2332 North 15th Street. This area of North Philadelphia is particularly hard hit by poverty, substance abuse, homelessness, HIV/AIDS, and crime.
Starting at the Winchester Recreation Center, the clean up crews will follow a route south to Diamond Street, west to 25th Street, north to Lehigh Avenue, and then back to 15th Street to end back at the Center. The clean up will occur in preparation for the 5K Walk for Hope, to be held on Saturday November 7. The Walk for Hope will raise funds to support summer camp programs for inner city youth. The walk is organized by HOPE Worldwide, in partnership with ODAAT, GPCC, State Representative Jewell Williams, and State Senator Shirley Kitchen.
Individuals participating in the event will include members of the recovery community and ex-offenders. Â Mel Wells, president of One Day At A Time, says, "The beauty of this event is not just the work that gets done, but in seeing individuals in recovery and individuals who have been incarcerated join together to give back to the community that has supported them."
ODAAT provides services to low-income and homeless men and women suffering from addiction and HIV/AIDS in Philadelphia. ODAAT was founded in 1983 by Reverend Henry T. Wells when he opened his home to a group of recovering addicts, laying the groundwork for a peer-based/community-based recovery program. Since then, ODAAT has increased its scope and impact to include transitional housing facilities, comprehensive case management services, and services to address the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the addicted community. ODAAT is a program of Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition.
