One Day At A Time Launches Customized Job Training Program
PHILADELPHIA, July 16, 2009 - One Day At A Time (ODAAT), is interviewing candidates for a new customized job training and placement program designed to prepare unemployed and dislocated workers for jobs in drug and alcohol recovery arena. Funded by the Philadelphia Workforce Development Corporation, the Recovery Career Development Project will combine basic job readiness and job training with specific training about working in addictions services. Upon completion of the training, participants will be placed in positions as receptionists, residential aides, outreach workers, and peer specialists in local agencies.
The Recovery Career Development Project training will include nine weeks of classroom training followed by a twenty-five hour internship. ODAAT will provide placement services and job retention support to individuals who complete the training. This is a pilot program that will initially serve twenty-five individuals, but ODAAT hopes to continue the program into the future.
The first round of training will begin on August 3, 2009. Interested individuals should call ODAAT at 215-226-7860 for more information or to schedule to apply and schedule an interview.
Robin Ingram, Director of Programs and Services, sums up this new program's ability to mesh ODAAT's recovery experience with the need for customized job training in the current economy. "Mel Wells and I are excited about this new venture and the opportunity to present the city with trained individuals in the drug and alcohol arena utilizing Reverend Wells' philosophy of community-based recovery."
ODAAT provides services to low-income and homeless men and women suffering from addiction and HIV/AIDS in Philadelphia. ODAAT was founded in 1983 by Reverend Henry T. Wells when he opened his home to a group of recovering addicts, laying the groundwork for a peer-based/community-based recovery program. Since then, ODAAT has increased its scope and impact to include transitional housing facilities, comprehensive case management services, and services aimed at addressing the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the addicted community. ODAAT is a program of Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition.
